Sports and culture

Strive for excellence and inclusion.

Slovenia is among the member states spending significantly on recreation, culture and religion with currently 1.5% of GDP. Whether it's team or individual sports, we have a track record across multiple disciplines built upon our strong sporting culture. We also have a cultural scene to match, which would greatly benefit from similar support and making Slovenian art and artists known beyond our borders while nurturing our cultural scene and distinct character.

On the downside, only 55% of the lowest income households regularly practice sports ( Norway 90%) and only about 20% of the population above age 55 participate in sporting activities (Denmark 70%) - two areas that policies should also aim to address.

Volt Slovenija therefore proposes the following:

Sporting facilities and accessibility

  • Develop a long term plan for building recreational sporting facilities on a ratio per capita similar to leading countries like Norway or Denmark. The focus should be on infrastructures accessible by all ages, financial backgrounds and in smaller municipalities.

Professional sports

  • Develop a plan for Slovenia to have internationally renowned club teams participating in major European competitions. We may not create a new Real Madrid, but we should be capable of matching the efforts of club teams like Crvena Zvezda.

Culture

  • Use the french concept of “Cultural Exception” and introduce an audiovisual law that gives part of public radio frequencies to stations focussing on local and independent music similar to the Austrian FM4.

  • Protect alternative sites and spaces like Ljubljana’s Metelkova from falling prey to commercialisation and urbanisation projects. Preserving our culture means preserving the spaces where it can develop freely.

  • Work with the European Union to provide the means for a cross-border weekly TV show across Balkan countries similar to the German Tatort where Swiss, Austrian and German detectives alternate on a weekly basis.
